Because it’s good for my soul

I spent the morning kicking off the first Monday of 2021 on a coaching call with a former client. I then caught up with my bestie in Brooklyn before I had therapy via telehealth. Basically, I was on the phone from 8am to 11:30am and by the time that was all over, I was feeling kind of tired. It would have been so easy for me to just put Homeland on the TV and curl up on the couch all afternoon but I knew that wouldn’t feed my soul. So I decided to gear up and head to Ski Cooper to take a few solo laps because it’s good for my soul.

As I made that decision, I realized that that would be a good decision making framework moving forward. When choosing how to spend my free time, from now on I will ask myself, “What does my soul need right now?” Because sometimes low energy or laziness tricks us into choosing to do the easiest thing instead of the thing that actually nourishes us. And when I think about what nourishes me at a soul level, those are usually things that bring me great joy, peace and inspiration. Don’t get me wrong, Homeland is a great series, but it doesn’t meet those criteria. Not like flying down a mountainside with sunshine in my face and fresh powder under foot.

Another great example of this concept is calling a close friend vs scrolling social media for an hour… they both take the same amount of time but one leaves me feeling nourished, connected, & supported and one leaves me feeling empty, insecure and lonely. Getting honest with myself about how these things make me feel has been critical for me to living in alignment with what actually fuels me. And it feels good to finally honor what I need instead of continuing to engage in behaviors that are compulsive but mindless – like the frequency with which I used to scroll all my social media. I can’t even begin to tell you how freeing it feels to let go of that habit… almost as freeing as flying down a mountain with 2 sticks on my feet. 😉

So now I ask you this:

What feeds your soul? What nourishes you? What’s been missing in your life? And what are you willing to give up to make space and time for the things that actually fill you up?

I hope you have a beautiful Friday and a nourishing weekend and that you are brave enough to let go of things that don’t fuel you anymore.

In reflection,

Sondra
